Abstract
Jungian psychology came to China after the proclamation of the policy of openness, at a time when many Western theories attracted the attention of Chinese intellectuals, including Freud's psychoanalysis. Therapeutic psychology has spread relatively slowly, partly due to the Chinese attitude towards mental disorders and the relationship between mind and body, and partly due to a cultural rejection of open discussions of sexual thoughts and fantasies that are common in Jungian analytical psychology and especially Freudian psychoanalysis. However, contrary to popular resistance to the theory of Freud in China, a large number of his works have been translated into Chinese. Jungian psychology is more compatible with traditional Chinese beliefs and practices, rather than Freudianism, in particular, as recognized by many, because of the emphasis on Jungian archetypes and synchronous activities. It is therefore not surprising that many Chinese-language websites devoted exclusively to analytical psychology of C. G. Jung. Moreover, certain key concepts of the theory of C. G. Jung, such as individuation (psychological development of the individual, in contrast to the general, collective psychology) have not found an adequate audi-ence in the environment of collectivist-oriented Chinese psychologists. However, about thirty Jungian volumes were translated into Chinese.
